Malabrigo Yarn Mill Fire

June 5, 2008

Sad, sad new for [tag]Malabrigo[/tag] yarn fans. The mill and offices burned May 29, 2008. The building that houses the mill was not severely damaged, according to the owners, but the office, lab, and warehouse are ruined.

Along with 500 kilos of stock in the works. Yikes – all that wonderful fiber up in smoke, makes me want to cry!

Since the building is in [tag]Uruguay[/tag], getting the local government moving fast on releasing the building for repairs is an oxymoron. Some governments just don’t understand our need for fiber!

The mill owners are now in Columbus, Ohio at the National NeedleArts Association ([tag]TNNA[/tag]) summer show hopefully not worrying too much about their building and how to get back into the business of spinning and dyeing.

I hope that the owners had the foresight to have backups of all their color formulas at some off site location. This fire should help all of us remember to make copies of our important information, back up our hard drives, and keep our information someplace safe.

Hopefully, they will be back in business when we, on this side of the world, need to start making our winter projects again. With Malabrigo yarn of course!
